The Banff Centre was founded in 1933 by the University of Alberta, Department of Extension, with a grant from the U.S.-based Carnegie Foundation. Seventy-five years since its founding, the Banff Centre is now globally respected arts, cultural, and educational institution and conference facility.

Part of Banff Centre’s annual activity is the Banff Mountain Photography Competition. Said photography competition  is open to both amateur and professional photographers.

Categories:

You may enter up to a maximum of five (5) images in each of the five (5) categories for a total of twenty-five (25) images. The five categories are:

• MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE – images depicting any mountain sport such as climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, etc.
• MOUNTAIN CULTURE – images with a cultural theme focusing on indigenous mountain people and their customs, traditions and ways of life as related to their mountain environment
• MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT – images that communicate an important message about the mountain environment/ecosystem
• MOUNTAIN FLORA/FAUNA – images of plants and animals found in a mountain environment
• MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE – images of mountain landscapes.
  Not adhering to these specifications may disqualify your entry.

Prizes:

• Grand Prize: $1,000CDN plus gifts from sponsors
• Category Prizes: $500CDN plus gifts from sponsors in each of the five categories
• Y2Y PRIZE: $500CDN will be awarded to the photographer with the best overall photograph from the Yellowstone to Yukon Region (Y2Y), regardless of category. The Yellowstone to Yukon eco-region extends from south of Yellowstone National Park to the central Yukon Territory. Please visit www.y2y.net/ for a complete description. Images must be labelled “Y2Y Region” in addition to their category of entry to be considered for the Y2Y Prize.
